very pinteresting…

Christmas is dangerous around here. Actually, since I have found pinterest, pretty much every holiday…every day…has the potential to be dangerous. Thankfully, I don’t have the money or the time to be really dangerous except at Christmastime. Hehe. We craft at Christmastime. Period. I seriously have a crafting budget this time of year. And it meshes so beautifully with our curriculum. Enough art for the whole year!! πŸ™‚ (not really)

This year…we start from scratch. Like…seriously,Β from scratch. No ornaments. No twinkle lights. Nothing. So. We have lots of projects to complete. We shopped for them yesterday. Oh, Hobby Lobby loves me. πŸ™‚

Today, my project started from a pin. Imagine that.

I don’t have a tree skirt. You can’t have a tree without a tree skirt, can you? I mentioned last year that it was time for a new one, since the one I had was 13 years old then…and ripped…and totally was. not. me. It was a dear wedding gift…but, umm…yeah. So…here’s the pin for this ruffle tree skirt I knew I had to have the moment I saw it. I did it a little differently than she did it…because…well, I’m just not that ruffly. I like ruffles, don’t get me wrong, but I like them a little less…well, ruffly. But I said that, didn’t I?

So. I bought 4 yards of cotton broadcloth. I probably should have brought the canvas drop cloth, but, hello…one more stop and who had time for that when I had a grand total of 2 hours to shop for a Christmas tree, tomato cages (another project, and for the record, lowes is sold out), all of my Christmas crafting supplies, get the tree home, and get food for the cherubs before driving 45 minutes to karate practice.

Anyway, I measured the width of the fabric–44″ inches–and cut a square–so I cut at 44″ the other direction! I folded the square in half, then in quarters, then I folded the quarters into a triangle. Just like the tutorial. πŸ™‚ (See the tutorial.) I cut the circle for the center, rounded the outside edge (seriously. tutorial), and then cut down one of the folds so that it would go around the tree. Β I took the rest of the 4 yards and…well…I have to admit…I’m not much of a measurer. I cut the almost-three-yards of fabric left lengthwise into 4 strips. Well, 8. Because I left it folded in half. (I really should have taken a picture) What I wound up with was 8 strips of fabric, each about 6″ wide. (hello. tutorial) They used 2″ strips. I don’t like 2″ strips. I used bigger strips, and smaller rufflies. I finished the top edge off with a smaller ruffle, and left the “tails” to tie around the tree. I. Love. It. It took a grand total of about an 40 minutes, start to finish.

Pretty sure I’m going to wind up sewing it all down. Because…umm…it’s white. It’s going to need to be washed, and I know the glue won’t stand up to the washer. And I’m NOT hand washing the thing. I’m actually kind of excited about it fraying…no finished edges!!

So. Here are the pictures:

Just the circle...with a bit of ruffly stuff.

And…now…

πŸ™‚ I love it. Totally worthwhile project. πŸ™‚ Thank you pinterest!
